October: Art Block

Already half the school semester is over. Time is going by fast and I still don’t feel like I have a lot of time to draw. I know no one looks here but that’s ok. I’m just tracking my personal progress. But still this is getting boring and repetitive so I have to think of some new ideas soon. I still feel kind of cringy typing this hopefully that goes away soon!

Progress

Tweened icon raffle prize; tweening motivation not super good so I hosted a raffle to push myself to do some animation. I already picked a winner and I am currently working on their prize. Other then that no other animations.

Rendering attempts

First I tried to render my own character I made recently but I am still struggling with hands and perspective. Her head looks slightly big, it’s rather messy, not well layered, and overall it’s just not my favorite. I might have a month where I just focus on things I’m bad at so I can improve. Current list for things to possibly study to improve rendering; perspective, hands, color theory, lighting sources, simply just a faster workflow, composition. There are probably more but I just listed the ones I can think of. I wish I could learn how to blend better and I want to find a good brush to use. For now my style is super inconsistent so I’m unable to set a good workflow. One day, maybe one day. For fanart (read permissions here) I also drew Reynold from Villains Are Destined to Die since my friend asked me to! I tried a different approach and a very very light sketch then just lassoed colors on. Also I do not draw male characters too often so I need to note to myself that I need to draw both genders. I tried yet another style as well. It’s so weird how I cannot stick with one. I wish I could but I’m always curious.

3d modeling

I bought the app Nomad Sculpt and I really enjoy it. I attempted my first model with it on the demo web version so I can’t export it as a turnaround unfortunately. It has its imperfections but I am happy with it. I remember seeing an artist I liked and they said they used nomad so I tried the demo then bought it. I’m not sure if I will open comms yet. To sculpt the face I just start from a normal sphere and for the hair I use tubes and half a sphere. I’m getting the hang of it but still don’t know what all the parts do. The model you see near this is the first model which I spoke of.

Halloween

Usually Halloween is a time loved by kids because of the candy you get from trick or treating. However, Halloween was boring both online and in real life for me. I created a headshot of an OC for a raffle but it didn’t do well. I just want to make more raffles in general but I have no clue what type of designs will do well and what won’t. I’m always stumped on what to design and what people like in designs.

Art block

I guess I wanted to talked about it since I have nothing else. I’m currently dealing with art block (a period of time when an artist is unmotivated to draw/uninspired) on top of school right now so I’m not super productive but it’s getting better and I’ll give some tips to overcome art block in this post.

  • Watch other creators draw and do art challenges. You might get Inspired to try the challenge they are doing
  • Take a break. Watch shows you like or do something else you enjoy. Sometimes your art block may be from burnout.
  • Try some other form of art, for me I couldn’t bring myself to tween so i just tried 3d modeling.
  • Just doodle, doodle anything that comes to mind. It doesn’t have to be perfect, it can be ugly or whatever. Doodle and move on. Sometimes inspiration doesn’t just hit and you have to do something to start up your motivation.
  • Try some prompts. You can generate some or follow monthly ones like Inktober.

Well that is it for this month, again I will attempt to come up with something less boring.
